Founded in 2023 by author and editor Kevin Hile, Uncle Bear Publishing specializes in nonfiction books that will educate and inform the public about the unique furry fandom. Kevin (known as Grubbs Grizzly in the fandom) is a native Californian who has worked in the reference and nonfiction publishing business since 1989. He is the author of over a dozen books and has edited over 300 titles. Born in 1965, Kevin considers himself to have been a furry since he was a child pretending to be Chip in Disney's Chip and Dale animations or Akela in Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book or a dragon in one of his many beloved fantasy novels and movies. Although he was always a furry at heart, he didn't know there were others like him until after he had access to the internet in the late 1980s and stumbled upon the now-defunct art site FurNation. He began exploring the art and stories of the fandom online, but it wasn't until a friend of his took him to a furmeet known as the Prancing Skiltaire in 2009 that he saw his first fursuiter. After that, he was hooked! He created his fursona (a bear), commissioned a fursuit by the talented Beastcub, and was on his way!
Since then, Kevin has attended many furry conventions and meets, started the online furry advice column "Ask Papabear," founded the Greymuzzles and Silvermuzzles Facebook groups, founded the Good Furry Awards, and is now starting his own publishing house and (soon) a YouTube channel. For the last 10 years, he has been laboring on completing his magnum opus, The Furry Book: The Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How of the Furry Fandom, which he prays he will finish for the Christmas season of 2025. His publishing house will be releasing works by other authors, too, including the already-published book by Tim Stoddard, Furtannia: The History of the Furry Fandom in the United Kingdom and the upcoming work by movie and TV authority Rod O'Riley, Movies for Furries: An A to Z Guide, due in late 2025 or early 2026.
Now that all the headaches and legal stuff involved in creating a small publishing house have been put to rest with a lot of hard work and aspirin, the real fun begins. Many other works are forthcoming! Stay Tuned!
